Zsuzsanna Hanna Biró: Professional Communication in the Hungarian Science of Education (1997–2006). Comparative Analysis in the Sociology of Science – an Attempt toward the Hungarian Adaptation of an International Research Project

In the 1980s, one of the leading areas of research among West German historians of education was educational science itself. The primary concern of the related sociological inquiries was to define the place of educational science among other sciences. One of the first outcomes of such initiatives attracting international attention was a comparative analysis of the French and German models of communication in educational science between 1955 and 1985. The findings revealed two different models of disciplinary development: strong theoretical orientation and relative disciplinary closure (isolation) as opposed to applied research and interdisciplinary character. In the academic year 2007/2008, a team of six Ph.D. students of the Graduate School in Educational Science, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, Hungary, carried out a research project adapting the French-German comparison for Hungary. Data was gathered from the studies appearing in the four leading Hungarian academic periodicals of educational science (Educatio, Iskolakultúra, Magyar Pedagógia and Új Pedagógiai Szemle) between 1997 and 2006. This paper presents the main findings of the comparative analyses in four parts, following the structure of the original French-German comparison: a) an overview of the authors of the examined periodicals; b) the periodicals appearing in the data as references; c) the names (authors) cited in the data; d) persons (e.g. authors) published papers had been written about. The analyses demonstrate that the Hungarian model seems to be closer to the German (a fact that can be seen as historically given). This similarity is especially obvious in the reflexive character of the scientific activities presented in the examined papers. A further result is the statistical evidence that Hungarian professional communication in educational science is shaped by an environment of multiple professional discourses which is unevenly reflected in the examined periodicals.
