Ibolya Tar: János Csengery, the classical philologist

János Csengery (1856–1945) was an important figure of Hungarian classical philology and education. After finishing his classical studies at Pázmány University, Budapest, he taught in several reputed academic secondary schools, then in Budapest, in the Gymnasium of the Teacher Training Institute from 1885 until 1896. His excellent background in his academic field and didactics made him exceptionally effective in presenting the ancient cultural heritage beyond teaching languages. From 1896, he was a professor at Franz Joseph University, first in Kolozsvár, then, following its relocation in 1921, in Szeged, acting as the director of the Institute of Latin Philology and the Institute of Ancient Art History, and also as the dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. He employed his all-round knowledge of literature, fine arts and music both in his teaching and in cultural activities. Csengery’s significance is greatest as an educator and as a transmitter of ancient culture.
