Ágnes Lovász: First-years german major's language learning motivation

The point of departure of the present study is a general lack of knowledge concerning foreign language majors’ backgrounds, language learning processes and the outcomes of their studies at a Hungarian university. The paper aims to give an account of an exploratory qualitative study. Participants were 36 first-year German majors in three groups; data were collected with the help of a questionnaire. The research focuses on three areas: students’ proficiency in German upon entry to university; their language learning motivation; and their self-assessment as language learners. The primary aim of the study was to explore participants’ language learning motives, self-assessment as regards their level of proficiency and learner roles, and to collect information on their language development. The paper discusses the relationship between students’ language levels and motivation, similarities and differences across the three groups, and emerging trends.
