Zsuzsanna Hoffmann: The ideals of ancient Rome realised through education

The aristocratic Roman society was conservative in its values and traditional and practical in its values. The educational ideal was the realisation of vir bonus, i.e. the education of citizens who satisfy the needs of the state in every respect and who possess the virtues of commitment, a love of freedom, a sense of duty, and adaptability. The transmission of the socially desirable values took place partly within the family, partly in an institutionalised way. This paper gives an overview of the educational thinking of the era by presenting the formation of schools, the readings and the subjects taught, as well as focusing on the works of distinguished personalities.
