György Ágoston: Dilemmas of Pre-Service Teacher Training at the University Level in the 1930S

Issues of teacher training caused long-lasting debates in Hungary from the time of its regulation by the state in 1883. In university circles the main issue was the incompatibility between the neohumanist ideal of university autonomy and academic freedom on the one hand, and state control in professional training on the other. Those involved in creating an efficient system of teacher training, however, emphasized the right of the state to ensure that future teachers receive proper training in their academic subjects as well as in pedagogy, in both theory and practice. The author traces the arguments of both sides from the 1880s to the 1937 Congress on Higher Education and analyses university endeavours to reject or to integrate and control the teacher training institutes and the teachers' qualifying examination board.
