Katalin Fehér: Educational Issues in the First Hungarian Newspapers and Journals

Beginnins in the late 18th century the Hungarian press discussed educational issues intensively. The present study reviews articles published in the early newspapers and journals. As an introduction, articles from well-known and widely read German and Austrian journals are quoted that served as a model for Hungarian authors and editors. The first newspaper in Hungarian, the Magyar Hírmondó, launched by Mátyás Rát in Bratislava in 1780, published numerous articles touching on educational issues. Some of these writings reviewed new publications about education, while others reported on educational trends in Hungary and abroad. From among the first Hungarian periodicals, articles of the journal Merkur von Ungarn, edited by Márton György Kovacsics, are discussed. The author then reviews some significant writings from the Mindenes Gyűjtemény, published in Hungarian in Komárom between 1789-1792. The study provides an overview of the educational issues that engaged the attention of the Hungarian public in the late 18th century.
